... when you join a tribe?

I never know if I should say "hello" or just be discrete but possibly rude. So just in case "Hello!"

I am in Mozambique right now, working (nothing to do with art) and just heard for the first time about Alberto Chissamo. Amazing work!

well i guess we should start from the beginning. some books say that manet was the father of modern art... some claim it's courbet... some even go as far to state that neoclassicism and david started the trend... but where do you stand...? or do you have a stand...?

am i the only one who thinks it's retarded that manet is considered a realist but is always catergorized with the impressionists as their 'leader' almost...?

I don't know if anyone even posts on this tribe anymore but I thought I would anyway. Has anyone read the article by Anna Chave on Les Demoiselles d'Avignon written in 1994? I was just wondering what people thought about it.

Gauguin's Trees

Hello! I do not know if this tribe is especially active nor its
composition. Also I confess I virtually gave up on keeping up with my tribes months and months ago so who knows if other people have done the same or not. But I have the following question:

Gauguin told Paul Serusier to paint the trees... what color? which ultimately resulted in Serusier's painting "The Talisman" and the establishment of the Nabis.

So I found this link:

http://painting.about.com/od/colourtheory/a/palette_Gauguin.htm

which says the trees were yellow, the shadows ultramarine, the leaves vermillion. I had always thought Gaugin's comment ran something like "If you see the red in the tree, paint the tree red."

Now I know this is splitting hairs, but does anyone know the answer to this question? Furthermore, is the story true as far as we know or apocryphal? I suppose we do have "The Talisman" to go by, which is rather real...

Finally, thanks for any help you can offer and I apologize if this question is too specific and nitpicky for this group! Thanks!

I'm going to Rome and Florence (4th trip to Europe, but first trip to Italy). Seems these cities are teeming with Renaissance works but all the good modern pieces are in Berlin, London, New York, Paris and Los Angeles. Any good suggestions for a modern art lover on these great Italian metropolises?

After years in music I'm finally returning back to visual art. I used to like Bacon, Dali, Geiger, Hirst, Dave McKean and recently picked on Gerhard Richter. In recent years I have been around some Art Exhibitions around Scandinavia, including Iceland and Finland. Has anyone any pointers as whats happening nowadays?

Just to get the ball rolling in here, here is an ice-breaker.

There is no right or wrong answer and no rhyme to the reason, just pick who you think is the better choice. We can debate later. No questions---Just PICK!!!!!!

1.)Better sense of design
a.)Kandinsky
b.)Boccioni

2.)More gruesome
a.)Munch
b.)Kirchner

3.)More insane
a.)Tzara
b.)Ernst

4.)Better Abstract Expressionist
a.)De Kooning
b.)Reinhardt

5.)More of a statement
a.)Guerilla Girls
b.)Kahlo

hello everyone, thanks for joining this tribe. here is where you introduce yourself and let everyone know a bit about you and your intrests in art.

my name is demi, i have a ba in art history and am working on my ma as i type this. i love modern and contemporary art with a passion. i have never really liked anything pre modern, although i appreciate it's merit on art history but it doesn't do that much for me like modern criticism. i have also been a foundation studies lecturer in the uk for modern art history classes. i love andy warhol and some of my other favourites are jeff koons, damien hirst, max ernst, marcel duchamp, lee krasner, and so many more...

i look forward to discussion with everyone - and thankyou for joining my tribe...!
